John Hasting’s background is not in hospitality, although by the looks of it he’s taking all aspects of his new role in his stride. The former Melbourne Stars cricketer owns and runs cafe Mr Frankie, open since May 2019. John’s 15 year on-field career came to an end following health complications, but you’ll still hear him providing sports commentary across a few channels, continuing his love for the game off the field. John and his wife, Bri, moved to the area a few years ago from Melbourne, but are already very much part of the fabric down here.
Along with partners Tom and Paula Walker, the team has established Mr Frankie in the heart of Frankston South, much to the delight of locals.
He described his role as “a bit of everything”, from serving coffee to painting walls and doing dishes in the first week of opening. John and co. are really using the culture of the Mornington Peninsula to their advantage, with an inner-city twist.
John expressed his love for the wine and food culture on the Peninsula, finding himself at classic establishments or the usual list of coastal activities.
The Peninsula continues to attract adventurous and entrepreneurial friends down to meet us, and we don’t mind one bit.
