From her gorgeous home studio, Kate Macindoe makes exquisite organic and sculptural jewellery, using textures from found objects she comes across on her many adventures in nature.

Kate always knew she wanted to do something creative, but it took a bit of experimenting - with a double degree in Primary Education and Visual Arts - before she landed on metal work. These days she works mostly in sterling silver, brass, gold and semi precious stones, with a focus on creative one-of-a-kind ‘perfectly imperfect’ pieces.

She explains, “Growing up, the jewellery that I saw in shops didn't really appeal to me. It just didn't excite me wearing something expensive that thousands of other people were wearing. I wanted to make pieces with soul and a story behind them.

I love the fact that because every single piece is made by hand, no two pieces are the same. And there is something so satisfying about being able to look back at the end of your work day and physically see the progress you’ve made. What may start with a few bits of dull scraps of metal, can finish with a set of sparkling rings ready to share and be treasured.”

Kate credits a creative mentor early in her career (local jeweller Flick Pope) with setting her up with the practical skills and business smarts to make a living out of doing what she loves most. She also credits living and working on the Ninch as central to her creative practice. “I love that even after living here my whole life I am still discovering new walking tracks, secret swimming holes and places to explore. Every time I travel I am reminded of just how lucky we are to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches and landscapes in the world. We also have an incredibly supportive community and there are so many great things to get involved in if you’re keen.”

As well as her nature and ocean inspired pieces designed to be worn every day, Kate also crafts commissioned pieces and custom engagement rings.

Originally found at the studios at Commonfolk, Kate now designs from her home studio on an acre in Hastings. She and partner Angus built the space when their little one was on the way, and now he's here, the lovely light filled space makes the perfect WFH set up.

"Working from home is perfect for this new chapter of life. I can get a few hours in the studio while he naps or set him up with some toys while I work. Banksi loves watching me make!"

The creative and handy brains behind the studio's year-long build was Angus, plus a little help from Byrne Built for the overall structural work and spotted gum exterior. Her studio is open by appointment for try-ons and inspiration, find more information via her socials and website.
