A pastel pink barndoor marks the entry to The Butcher's Daughters Cakes, a cute-as-a-button bakeshop located in the middle of Main Street Mornington. Inside, you'll find cabinets bursting with decadent house-made treats, including the famous wagon wheels, cinnamon scrolls, cookie dough brownies and cupcakes filled with sweet ganache. With a handful of tables available for seated service, the bustling bakeshop welcomes a steady flow of locals and out-of-towners who gather to sample the daily delights.
The light and bright space is designed to spark joy, featuring peachy tones, colourful planters and suspended florals throughout. A low tiled table provides the perfect crafting station for kids, whilst adults perch at terrazzo tops to chat over tea and scones. The pink lemonade scones are among the most popular items on the menu, served with lashings of rose whipped cream and sticky jam. There's also gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free options, from moreish gluten-free cheesecake brownies to vegan cupcakes and raw desserts.
The friendly team serve up quality espresso by Odyssey Coffee Roasters, a strong and full-bodied blend with hints of milk chocolate, malt, and berries. You'll also find a range of sourdough sandwiches and pastries sourced from Ned's Bake in South Yarra. If you don't fancy yourself as a sweet tooth, you can tuck into a house-made savoury scone with delicate herbs and chive cream cheese. The choice is yours, and each one is delicious.
The baker behind the brand is young gun Hannah Vincent, a qualified patisserie chef born into Melbourne's hospitality scene. Hannah grew up working with her father, the butcher, delivering fresh produce to iconic markets and restaurants. She learned all about the different cuts, the importance of building relationships with suppliers and the huge amount of hard work and dedication required to succeed in business. For Hannah, her father demonstrated a genuine commitment to quality and dedication to craft, inspiring and igniting her own passion for baking.
After studying patisserie at William Angliss Institute, Hannah began creating and sharing bespoke wedding cakes for friends and family. Her cakes quickly garnered a following among aspiring chefs and fellow bakers, inspired by her creativity and technical prowess. Soon, The Butcher's Daughter found herself working with some of the best cake makers and cafes on the Mornington Peninsula.
These days, The Butcher's Daughters Cakes is a preferred supplier for many of the swanky wedding venues on The Ninch, including The Epicurean Red Hill and The Baths in Sorrento. Hannah works closely with Herbaceous Flowers in Mount Eliza and Poppy Culture in Mornington to create her signature floral designs. "It's all about creating an incredible taste and experience, and the toppings add to the theatre of it all," says Hannah.
Each boutique wedding cake is lovingly designed by Hannah through consultations with the couple, combining their favourite flavours with layers of soft sponge and buttercream. You'll have to book well-in-advance, mind you, with a six-month waitlist to secure a custom creation.
Recently, Hannah has launched a range of daily cakes perfect for spontaneous celebrations and last-minute party planning. You can drop into the bakeshop to pick up a show-stopping pink lemonade meringue pie, a classic carrot cake or rich chocolate cake topped with lush buttercream and gold sugar dust crumb. With the option to add custom florals and acrylic toppers, these beauties are accruing brownie points across the Peninsula.
The bakeshop is now open daily from 8:30am-4pm to satisfy your sugar cravings. You can visit the online store to order a dessert box, customise a celebration cake or shop a curated range of decorative products for budding pastry chefs.
