On the hunt for the perfect crusty sourdough? The ultimate almond croissant? Here’s our list of the best bakeries on The Mornington Peninsula to help satisfy those carby cravings.
Johnny Ripe
Located amongst the picturesque hills of Main Ridge, this farm-to-café bakery is a local icon. The cafe serves up an all-day seasonal brunch menu alongside the full range of Johnny Ripe goodies, from buttery pies and savoury tarts to pastries and sweet treats. You can’t go past the cronuts – donuts made from croissant pastry and dipped in finger-licking cinnamon sugar – or the mince pies come Christmas time. Take a picnic rug and soak in the views of Red Hill Lavender Farm as you sip on a coffee and devour one of their famous apple pies.
The Butchers Daughter’s Cakes
The Butcher’s Daughters Cakes is an insta-worthy bakehouse located amongst the hustle and bustle of Main Street Mornington. It’s the perfect spot to stop by for tea and scones, with sweet and savoury options on the menu. Beans are from the good folk at Odyssey Coffee Roasters, with a spiced chai by Calmer Sutra Tea. We recommend a mixed box of house-made wagon wheels, tim tams and royals to take home and share (or not).
Baked In Sorrento/Portsea
With two sites in Sorrento and Portsea, the Baked In team serve up the usual suspects – tasty pies, pastries, pizzas, wraps and salad rolls – alongside gourmet salads, chia puddings and healthy grab'n'go options. Think vegan burrito bowls, salmon poke bowls and acai bowls on tap. It's a fancy offering and fit-out that’s to be expected on this end of the Peninsula. Expect Allpress coffee brewed to perfection with alternative milks available.
Millers Bread Kitchen
With a new store in Mornington joining the OG in Dromana, there’s now more Miller’s Bread love to go around. There’s a massive range of sweet and savoury options available, with a heavy focus on local produce from the Mornington Peninsula. Seasonal focaccias and vegan flatbreads fly out the door at lunchtime, with the carrot cake, brownies and cinnamon rolls proving equally popular. You’ll find Inglewood’s Roosevelt Blend gracing the grinders at both locations.
Store 360 Rye
Located on Dundas Street smack bang between the bay and surf beach, Store 360 in Rye is a busy general store serving up top-notch Kelter Coffee, pantry staples and a stellar range of freshly baked goods, from tasty toasties and baguettes to chunky pies and flakey sausage rolls. You’ll find loaded cookies, Butterbings and epic pastries from the Red Hill Baker filling the cabinets. Whilst waiting for your coffee and egg and bacon muffin, you can browse a selection of locally-made gifts and take-home meals.
Flinders Sourdough
A visit to Flinders Sourdough is like stepping back in time, with organic sourdough loaves cooked in a traditional wood-fired oven inside the historic bakehouse. Every loaf is made using freshly milled-flour, mature sourdough starter, filtered water and sea salt. It’s a labour of love and an ode to tradition. The fruity beach buns and vanilla slice are best enjoyed with a Little Rebel coffee and a Vienna loaf to take away.
The Red Hill Baker
The Red Hill Baker in Balnarring is a classic country bakery that uses quality ingredients and slow fermentation to create its artisan range. Traditional French baguettes, teacakes, Moroccan lentil pies, lamingtons, wine bread... There’s something for everyone here. We know this might be a big call, but we reckon theirs is the best almond croissant on The Ninch. Stop in and try one for yourself.
