If a day spa and yoga studio merged, the result would be Hut Yoga & Wellness.
What began as a place for yoga enthusiast and Polperro owner Emma Phillips to de-stress, has become the yoga hotspot (no pun in intended) on the Peninsula, frequented by locals and weekend visitors alike.
A minutes' walk from Arthur Seat Road, down a winding pea gravel path, you’ll find nestled among the trees a quaint weatherboard cottage that in Emma’s words has been “dropped into the ground”. Literally at one with its surrounds, it’s hard not to feel grounded the moment you walk up the stairs to this light-filled yoga studio.
Like all good day spa-like experiences, everything is taken care of: lavender and flaxseed eye pillows are laid next to meticulously placed slate grey Manduka yoga mats, towels, straps and blocks. Freshly brewed Love Tea tea is served in rustic Made in Japan ceramic cups, post workout. And if you weren’t planning an impromptu wine region yoga session, you can swing by the strategically located Amelie & Frank's, stockists of millennial yogi brand Spiritual Gangster.
In keeping with the name, the studio is heated to an ambient 28-30C thanks to infrared heating panels suspended from the ceiling. This technology is designed to warm muscles and encourage blood flow, flexibility and detoxification.
Sessions are capped at 10 people to keep the atmosphere serene and intimate, and in the cooler months a roaring gas-log fireplace helps make winter workouts that little bit more bearable.
Classes run 7 days a week and include beginner’s yoga every Friday of the month along with mellow flow, power flow, surf flow (run by pro surfer Georgia Fish), theta meditation and yin yoga. HotHut also holds monthly mind and body workshops.
